A police officer accused of murdering mask vendor Boniface Kariuki will remain in custody until October 6, when the High Court will rule on his bail application.

Constable Klinzy Baraza is facing murder charges after allegedly shooting Kariuki, an incident that sparked outrage and calls for police accountability.

On Tuesday, High Court judge Kanyi Kimondo directed that Baraza remain in remand until the ruling is delivered. The judge’s decision followed strong opposition from the victim’s family, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

The parties argued that the affidavit filed in support of Baraza’s bail application was defective and urged the court to deny him release pending trial.

The October 6 ruling will determine whether Baraza will continue facing trial from custody or be allowed bail under strict conditions.
