The African Union has firmly rejected any recognition of Somaliland as an independent state, warning that such moves threaten Somalia’s unity and regional stability.
In a statement issued on Friday, December 26, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf reaffirmed the continental body’s long-standing position supporting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said the AU would not recognise Somaliland, insisting it remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
Youssouf warned that attempts to undermine Somalia’s unity violate African Union principles and risk setting a dangerous precedent across the continent.
The statement followed Israel’s decision to formally recognise Somaliland, a move that triggered condemnation from Somalia and several regional states.
The AU reiterated its commitment to supporting Somalia’s institutions, peace efforts and inclusive governance.
