All boarding schools in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, have been shut down indefinitely following a wave of arson attacks that gutted dormitories and disrupted learning in at least four institutions within a week.
The affected schools include Ucekeini Girls, Gathiru Boys, Muhoho Boys, and Mururia Boys, where parents rushed in panic to collect their children just days after reopening.
Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe confirmed the closure, saying the move was necessary to avert further damage, particularly over weekends when teacher supervision is minimal. At least 25 students have been arrested in connection with the destruction and are expected in Gatundu Court on Monday.
Investigations point to an Instagram group allegedly used by learners to plan the attacks. According to Kagombe, students accessed the group through computer labs and smuggled mobile phones into school. The chats revealed grievances ranging from strict frisking during re-entry, tough examinations, and demands to push reopening hours from noon to 4 pm.
Parents have expressed concern over the lack of transparency on the extent of losses and fear being burdened with reconstruction costs. With national examinations only weeks away, stakeholders are now expected to meet and chart the way forward as detectives intensify investigations.
