Attack on Gachagua’s Othaya church service planned in Nairobi, officer alleges

A violent attack on former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during a Sunday church service in Othaya, Nyeri County, was allegedly planned days in advance in Nairobi, with instructions issued to limit police interference.

An officer who claimed to have been part of the operation said a team of 15 officers was assembled in Nairobi on Friday and cleared that evening to disrupt the service at Witima ACK Church. According to the officer, the team was instructed to link up with about 20 youths from Nyeri County, while local police were allegedly ordered not to intervene.

“We were cleared on Friday evening to disrupt Gachagua’s church service. Area police were ordered in advance not to interfere,” the officer said.

The officer further claimed the meeting was convened by two senior officers based at Vigilance House in Nairobi, alongside three elected leaders from the Mt Kenya region, one of them a woman. He alleged that the mission was to attack Mr Gachagua and, “if possible, injure him.” However, he said the plan encountered resistance from within the team.

“Some of us were afraid to attack a church, and there were loyalty problems when some officers openly showed support for Gachagua,” the officer said.

According to witnesses, the attack unfolded shortly after 11am on Sunday, moments after Mr Gachagua arrived at the church. A van and a Toyota Probox reportedly entered the church compound escorted by a police patrol vehicle. At least 15 armed men, believed to be police officers, are said to have descended on the compound and opened fire towards the church and vehicles parked outside.

Witnesses said tear gas canisters were lobbed into the church, forcing worshippers, including children, to flee in panic.

“When I heard the commotion, I stepped out onto the church balcony and witnessed everything,” said a worshipper who requested anonymity. “The men were dressed in jungle fatigues with their faces covered. Some were shooting towards the church while others shot at the vehicle tyres. They also lobbed tear gas canisters into the church.”

The witness said the attack lasted more than 30 minutes. When calm was restored, several vehicles, including one belonging to Mr Gachagua, had shattered windscreens, while church doors and windows bore bullet damage. Some worshippers reportedly sustained minor injuries.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen condemned the incident and directed the Inspector-General of Police to immediately pursue those responsible.

“Violence anywhere, and especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable. The police must move without fear or favour and deal decisively with the sponsors and perpetrators of this act,” Mr Murkomen said, adding that investigations had been launched.

Speaking later at his Wamunyoro home, Mr Gachagua described the incident as an assassination attempt and accused the government of sanctioning the attack.

“What happened today was an assassination attempt on my life. This was a government-sanctioned killer squad,” he said, alleging that the attackers belonged to a notorious police unit linked to abductions and extrajudicial killings and were operating with the cover of local police.

He further accused two Members of Parliament, one from Nyeri and another from Murang’a, of involvement in planning the attack. Mr Gachagua said he had since called off all planned public rallies in Nyeri County, citing security concerns and infiltration of his logistics.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki also condemned the incident, stating that violence in a place of worship was unacceptable regardless of who was responsible. He called for an impartial investigation and prosecution of all those involved.

Meanwhile, Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri questioned Mr Gachagua’s claims and urged him to formally record a statement with the police, arguing that investigations require official complaints.

National Police Service spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the Inspector-General had directed the Internal Affairs Unit to commence investigations with urgency. He added that the Regional Police Commander for Central Kenya had ordered the scene secured and investigations initiated, stressing that violence in places of worship has no place in the country.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing.
