Autopsy confirms lawyer Kyalo Mbobu shot eight times as investigations intensify

Government Chief Pathologist Johansen Oduor has confirmed that Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu died from excessive bleeding and severe injuries after being shot eight times in a drive-by attack along Magadi Road on Tuesday, September 9.

Speaking after the postmortem on Thursday, September 11, Oduor revealed that two bullets were recovered from Mbobu’s body, even as investigators disclosed that several spent cartridges were missing from the scene. Police earlier reported that Mbobu was shot five times in the head, killing him instantly.

The lawyer was attacked by unknown assailants while stuck in traffic near the Galleria–Brookside area. Authorities disclosed he had earlier attended two separate meetings in Nairobi before beginning his journey home.

His death has drawn outrage from the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), which described the killing as a “brutal, premeditated assassination” that highlighted the growing risks facing legal practitioners. His family also demanded swift justice, describing him as the family’s pillar and breadwinner.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed that “persons of interest” have already been identified and interrogated by detectives, with more names expected to follow as eyewitness accounts continue to aid the investigation.

Murkomen assured Kenyans that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is piecing together crucial evidence and urged members of the public with information to report to the nearest police station.

Meanwhile, forensic experts underscored the importance of conducting autopsies even in seemingly obvious murder cases. Beyond confirming the legal cause of death, postmortems provide crucial details such as bullet trajectory, shooting range, and possible survival chances, information vital for court trials, insurance processes, and closure for families.
