A Grade One pupil has died and seven other children have been injured after a swarm of bees attacked a group of pupils in Michacha Village, Samba Sub-location, Suba South Constituency, Homa Bay County.
The incident occurred while the children were playing near their homes, with preliminary reports indicating they may have unknowingly provoked the bees. Area Chief Lucas Ocholla confirmed that the injured pupils were rushed to Magunga Level Four Hospital for emergency treatment. Seven of them were treated and discharged.
The critically injured child was referred to St Camillus Sori Hospital but later succumbed to the bee stings. Her body has since been moved to the facility’s mortuary.
Chief Ocholla has called on parents and guardians to closely monitor children during the holiday season to avoid similar tragedies.
This is the second bee-related death reported in Homa Bay in recent weeks. Earlier this month, a 38-year-old man from Atonik Village was fatally attacked after provoking bees on a neighbour’s farm, according to police from Oyugis Police Station.
Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, especially in areas known to host beehives.
