Beryl Achieng, Raila Odinga’s sister, dies, leaving family and friends mourning the Kenyan educator and public figure

The Odinga family is grieving the loss of Beryl Achieng Odinga, younger sister of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Her death was confirmed on Tuesday, November 25, by her sister Ruth Odinga, who did not disclose the cause of death.

Beryl, the daughter of Jaramogi Odinga and Mary Auma, was also the biological sister of Oburu Oginga. She is survived by her children Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurus. Ruth described Beryl’s passing as a “heavy loss” while expressing gratitude for the time they shared.

Reports indicate Beryl had been battling an illness and passed away in a Nairobi hospital after several weeks of treatment. Despite keeping a low public profile, she was a distinguished educator and lawyer and served as Chairperson of Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company.

Beryl married real estate tycoon Otieno Abala in 1974; the couple later separated. She remained committed to education, being the only Odinga sibling to pursue schooling entirely in Kenya. Her death comes six weeks after Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, in India following a cardiac arrest.

Beryl Achieng Odinga’s life and service are being remembered fondly by family, friends, and colleagues, highlighting her quiet yet lasting impact on Kenya’s civic and educational spheres.
