Bishop Kodia’s fiery sermon at Raila Odinga’s State Funeral calls out corruption and urges moral renewal

The atmosphere at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday, October 17, was charged with emotion as Bishop Prof. David Kodia of the Anglican Diocese of Bondo delivered a powerful sermon during the State Funeral of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

The Bishop’s message, both spiritual and political, drew thunderous applause as he challenged leaders to emulate Raila’s integrity and selflessness. “When we proclaim the Word, it must have power to transform this nation to free it from those looting at every level,” he declared.

He openly rebuked corrupt officials, warning that misuse of public office would invite condemnation. “If there’s anyone here governor, MCA or otherwise who has looted this country, you stand the chance to be condemned,” he warned, sending murmurs through the packed stadium.

Bishop Kodia lamented that corruption had normalized a “culture of handouts,” eroding Kenya’s moral fabric. He contrasted this with Raila’s principled politics, saying, “Baba never used money to persuade. He used the power of conviction and the strength of words.”

The sermon reached its emotional peak when the Bishop asked, “How many can fit in the shoes of Raila Odinga today?” prompting mourners to rise in a standing ovation as they waved Kenyan flags in respect.

The service, attended by thousands, including Ethiopian President Taye Selassie and former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, celebrated Raila’s lifelong dedication to democracy, justice, and equality.

Following the ceremony, Raila’s body was taken to his Karen home ahead of a public viewing in Kisumu on Saturday, before his final resting in Bondo on Sunday.
