The Cabinet has approved the expansion of the busy Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi Road into a dual carriageway, a move expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and boost connectivity between Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
In a dispatch released on Tuesday, the Cabinet said the 23.5-kilometre road will be upgraded from a two-lane highway to a dual carriageway to enhance mobility and cut travel times along one of the most congested routes linking the capital to the fast-growing Kiambu region.
The road, which serves Muthaiga, Runda, Ridgeways, and Kiambu Town, will feature bypasses, loops, and access roads to increase capacity and ensure smooth traffic flow during peak hours.
In addition, the project will incorporate lanes for non-motorised transport, including walkways and cycling paths, to enhance safety and accessibility for all road users.
“The dualling is part of the government’s broader effort to modernise Nairobi’s metropolitan transport network in line with Kenya Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals on infrastructure and mobility,” the Cabinet noted.
The announcement comes just weeks after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja revealed that the county government is investing Ksh2.1 billion in road construction and rehabilitation across the capital’s 17 sub-counties, with several projects already underway in Embakasi East and West.
Governor Sakaja said the partnership between the county and national governments aims to open up neighbourhoods, connect essential services, and ease movement across the city.
“This is how we bring services closer to our people,” Sakaja said, affirming that the ongoing works reflect visible progress rather than plans on paper.
Once completed, the Muthaiga–Kiambu–Ndumberi dual carriageway is expected to transform mobility, reduce travel times for thousands of daily commuters, and spur economic growth along the corridor.
