Nairobi authorities have arrested a Chinese national in Gikomba Market following a major seizure of counterfeit goods valued at Ksh50 million. The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) confiscated 65,000 socks and apparel bearing fake global brand logos, intended for sale during the festive season.
According to ACA Nairobi Regional Manager Abdi Abikar, the consignment was allegedly routed through Uganda to conceal its origin. “The distributor planned to release these substandard goods at peak holiday season,” Abikar said. The suspect, considered a flight risk, is being held at Kamukunji Police Station while authorities trace his supply network and local collaborators.
ACA Executive Director Robi King’a warned that counterfeit merchandise is a serious threat to consumer safety, local jobs, and Kenya’s retail and manufacturing sectors. King’a added that genuine traders benefit when illegal networks are dismantled, as fake products depress prices and undermine market confidence.
The authority confirmed it will increase surveillance during the festive period, focusing on Gikomba, Kamukunji, Eastleigh, and Nairobi CBD, which are notorious for counterfeit sales.
