Nairobi City County has extended the ongoing land rates waiver to January 9, following an overwhelming turnout of landowners at City Hall and sub-county customer service centres.
Receiver of Revenue Tiras Njoroge said the extension was a one-off administrative decision aimed at clearing long queues witnessed as the December 31 deadline approached. He noted that many ratepayers turned up in good faith but were unable to complete payments due to congestion.
Njoroge cautioned that the waiver marks the final grace period, warning that strict enforcement under the National Rating Act will resume immediately after January 9. This includes penalties, interest, and possible recovery measures against defaulters.
He observed that low compliance continues to strain county services, noting that essential functions such as roads, health services, waste management and public lighting rely heavily on land rates revenue.
County officials have urged landowners to use official payment channels only, including sub-county revenue offices and the Nairobi Pay platform, warning against fraudsters.
Governor Johnson Sakaja has previously noted that only a fraction of registered land parcels are compliant, signalling tougher action once enforcement begins.
