Chief Justice Martha Koome has gazetted the appointment of more than 200 magistrates across the country to handle specialized cases involving corruption, land, and labor disputes.
The appointments, announced through Gazette Notices dated October 10 and 19, 2025, are part of the Judiciary’s ongoing reforms to improve efficiency and ensure faster resolution of cases.
Among the appointees are six magistrates assigned to preside over anti-corruption and economic crimes cases — Maureen Iberia, Victoria Achieng Ochanda, Janette Wandia Nyamu, Wilson Kipchumba Kitur, Christabel Irene Agutu, and Japheth Cheruiyot Bii.
A further 58 magistrates have been designated to handle environmental and land-related disputes, which continue to form one of Kenya’s most contested areas of litigation.
In the largest category of appointments, 144 magistrates will preside over employment and labor relations cases especially disputes where an employee’s gross monthly pay does not exceed Ksh 80,000.
They will also oversee matters arising under key labor laws, including the Employment Act, the Labor Relations Act, and the Work Injury Benefits Act.
CJ Koome noted that the designations were made in line with the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act (2003), the Environment and Land Court Act (2011), and the Employment and Labor Relations Court Act (2011).
She explained that the move is aimed at enhancing access to justice and ensuring that specialized cases are handled by magistrates with the right expertise and training.
“The Judiciary remains committed to streamlining case management and decentralizing access to justice by taking specialized services closer to the people,” the CJ stated.
The appointments come amid increased demand for specialized judicial handling of corruption, land, and labor disputes, which often require sector-specific interpretation and consistency in rulings.
Judiciary insiders say the move will also ease case backlogs and boost confidence in the justice system, particularly in subordinate courts handling complex or technical disputes.
