Malala Slams Raila for Betrayal, Warns of Growing Leadership Void in Kenya

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has criticised ODM leader Raila Odinga for what he calls abandoning his role in holding the government accountable.

Speaking during an interview on Spice FM, Malala accused Raila of forming a de facto alliance with President William Ruto through the ongoing Broad-Based National Dialogue, leaving Kenyans without a credible opposition voice.

“You cannot be in government and still claim to speak for the people,” Malala said. “Once you’re part of the regime, you become complicit in its failures.”

Malala argued that the current political landscape undermines the constitutional framework created to ensure a balance of power between government and opposition.

“The drafters were futuristic. They knew we needed checks and balances,” he noted. “But today, the opposition is in bed with the government.”

The former Kakamega senator painted a grim picture of the country’s state, accusing government leaders of violating the Constitution.

“I am proud to be Kenyan, but politically speaking, we are not at a good place,” Malala said. “Our country is at its lowest since independence. Government officials are perforating the very Constitution they swore to protect.”

Malala dismissed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between ODM and UDA, calling it illegitimate and unsustainable. He accused Raila of repeatedly pursuing power through informal arrangements.

“From the Handshake, BBI, and now this dialogue, it’s all about getting into power through backdoor deals,” he said.

He also criticised Parliament, saying it has surrendered its independence and now operates as an extension of the Executive.

“If all 290 MPs and 47 Women Reps are doing the Executive’s bidding, that’s dictatorship,” Malala stated.

He warned that civic resistance would grow if the constitutional order is not restored. According to him, the growing public unrest reflects a deeper political crisis.

“What we are witnessing is a tribeless, leaderless uprising,” he said. “Power belongs to the people, and in 2027, they will reclaim it.”
