The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has shut down eight unlicensed courier companies in Eastleigh, Nairobi, as part of an ongoing nationwide compliance crackdown.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 21, CA confirmed that the raid was conducted in partnership with the National Police Service (NPS), leading to several arrests. The suspects are being held at California Police Station, awaiting arraignment at the Makadara Law Courts.
“The Authority, in undertaking its compliance and enforcement mandate, conducted a raid on unlicensed service providers in the Eastleigh area. Samples of parcels, receipts, and consignment books were seized and preserved as court exhibits,” CA said in its statement.
The firms were found to be offering parcel and courier services without licenses, contrary to Section 67 of the Kenya Information and Communications Act of 1998.
CA has since urged companies seeking to operate in the courier sector to apply for licenses at its offices in Nairobi, Kisumu, Eldoret, Nyeri, and Mombasa.
“The Authority cautions members of the public to seek parcel and courier services from licensed providers only. Dealing with licensed operators safeguards consumers, ensures secure and reliable delivery, and supports lawful growth of the sector,” the regulator added.
This comes just two months after CA announced plans to revoke the licenses of 13 Nairobi-based courier operators, including four international firms, Afrasia Courier Express, Courier Plus Logistics, Rioma Courier Services Limited, and Delta Handling Services.
