A Kibera court has directed Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) and Nairobi Women’s Hospital to submit medical records for Kennedy Kalombotole, the key suspect in the murder of two patients at KNH.
Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutahi ordered the hospitals to provide the documents by Thursday before the court rules on a police request to detain Kalombotole for 21 more days to allow for further investigations.
According to a miscellaneous application filed in court, police have yet to collect Kalombotole’s DNA samples. Investigators intend to compare them with samples retrieved from the crime scene and the deceased’s body.
“The autopsy on the deceased is yet to be conducted by a government pathologist to establish the cause of death and collect samples for analysis at the Government Chemist,” the court documents stated.
Police arrested Kalombotole on July 18 at Kenyatta National Hospital. He had been admitted and discharged but was held at the facility over a separate case involving an incident that occurred on the night of February 6 and 7, 2025.
The investigating officer noted that due to workload challenges, the team has not completed key procedures such as fingerprint collection and taking the suspect’s statement.
“The respondent was arrested at the hospital where he had been admitted since November 2024. He has no known place of residence, making him a flight risk. If released on bail, there’s a high chance he could abscond and interfere with investigations,” read part of the police application.
The court was also informed that the manner in which the patient was killed triggered outrage and grief among the victim’s family and community, who are still struggling to come to terms with the murder.
Kalombotole is accused of killing Edward Mainge Ndegwa at the hospital’s 7th floor, ward 7C, on July 17.
