CS Ruku says Kenya has enough food reserves for drought response

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has assured Kenyans that the government has sufficient food reserves to cushion communities affected by the ongoing drought.

Speaking on Friday, the CS said no Kenyan should lose their life due to hunger, noting that the State has enough food in its stores to support those in need.

Ruku said the government is already on the ground in the hardest-hit counties, distributing food and nutrition supplements to vulnerable households as part of a coordinated national response.

The Ministry, through the State Department for Special Programmes, is leading a multi-agency effort involving the National Drought Management Authority, regional water agencies and National Government Administration Officers to identify affected families and livestock.

He noted that support being rolled out includes food supplies, water, fodder and other essential relief items aimed at cushioning communities from the harsh effects of the prolonged dry spell.

The CS added that the government is also working closely with humanitarian partners to reinforce strategic food reserves as drought continues to strain livelihoods in arid and semi-arid areas.

His remarks come amid criticism from sections of leaders who claim the response has been slow.

However, Ruku dismissed the claims, saying the government began preparations as early as July last year based on available data and early warning systems.

He maintained that the State has not been caught off guard, adding that in severely affected counties, food distribution is being carried out twice every month to ensure no family is left behind.

As drought conditions persist, the government says it remains on high alert to prevent a humanitarian crisis and safeguard both lives and livelihoods.
