CS Tuya visits KDF troops in Somalia

Defence Cabinet Secretary (CS) Soipan Tuya visited Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) troops deployed in Somalia under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission (AUSSOM) on December 20. She was accompanied by Lieutenant General David Keter, Commander of the Kenya Army.

CS Tuya lauded the soldiers for their discipline, courage, and unwavering commitment, and recognized the resilience of their families supporting them far from home. “As the year draws to a close, we honour their service and wish them strength, protection, and renewed courage,” she said.

Since January 2025, KDF has been deployed under AUSSOM, with a mandate to stabilise Somalia, degrade Al-Shabaab, and build the capacity of Somali security forces. Troops operate mainly in Lower Juba, Middle Juba, and Gedo regions, with bases in Kismayo and Dhobley.

KDF activities include infrastructure development such as renovating the Dhobley Airstrip, training Jubaland Security Forces recruits, and conducting Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) projects, including medical outreach programs and the distribution of clean water and learning materials. The Special Boat Unit has ensured maritime safety and rescued crew members in distress, demonstrating its strategic importance.

Beyond operations, KDF has completed projects such as constructing Somali National Army camps, securing supply routes, building classrooms and sports facilities, renovating health centres, de-silting dams, and improving rainwater harvesting. These efforts support local communities and promote regional stability.

CS Tuya reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to regional peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and troop welfare, extending gratitude to international partners supporting the mission, while wishing the troops strength and safety as the year comes to a close.
