Residents of Kiratina and Gikumari in Ruiru, Kiambu County are set to access electricity for the first time after decades of living in darkness.
Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, who toured the two villages to launch the initiative, described the areas as among the remotest in Ruiru Constituency and the county at large.
The project, being implemented through the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), has already commenced. Wandayi assured that the electrification program will be extended across Kiambu County at no cost to households.
Area MP Simon King’ara, who accompanied the CS, welcomed the move, terming it a game-changer for residents who have long been disadvantaged. Community members expressed optimism that electricity access will improve local businesses, education, and security.
CS Wandayi reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring no village in Kiambu or elsewhere in the country is left behind in energy access.
