The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a detailed probe into the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a head-on collision on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway on December 13, 2025.
According to the DCI, initial investigations show that Jirongo’s Mercedes-Benz, registration KCZ 305U, collided with a PSV bus operated by Climax Company Ltd (registration KCU 576A) at around 2:19 am. The impact pushed his vehicle roughly 25 metres from the crash site, while the bus came to rest about 50 metres away.
Homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory visited the scene, collected evidence, and reviewed CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station. The footage reportedly shows Jirongo entering the station at 2:18:40 am, not refuelling, before turning right toward Nairobi seconds later, moments before the collision.
The PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, is on cash bail and will report to Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, while being investigated for causing death by dangerous driving. Witness statements have been recorded from the petrol station staff, attendees at a meeting Jirongo held at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant, and other bystanders. Further statements will be taken from bus passengers, and the forensic team will revisit the scene.
Once investigations are complete, the DCI will forward the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review. The agency extended condolences to Jirongo’s family, friends, and associates, assuring the public of a credible and impartial inquiry.
The late Jirongo will be buried at his family home in Lumakanda on Tuesday, December 30, with arrangements overseen by a funeral committee chaired by former MP Fred Gumo. Senator Khaniri confirmed that he will be laid to rest next to his parents.
