Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Kipkoech Lagat has formally stepped aside from his duties pending the conclusion of investigations into the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’, who died in police custody earlier this month.
In a statement issued Monday, Lagat said he acted “in good and conscious thought of the weight of his office and the public interest surrounding the case.” He added, “I have today opted to step aside from the office of the Deputy Inspector General – Kenya Police Service pending completion of investigations.”
His deputy will temporarily assume his responsibilities.
Lagat also pledged full cooperation with authorities and extended condolences to Ojwang’s family, stating, “I undertake to provide any support that may be required of me during the investigations of the unfortunate incident.”
Public outcry intensified following allegations that Lagat had filed a defamation complaint against Ojwang, who had accused him of corruption, which allegedly led to the blogger’s arrest.
Known for a 25-year career, including leadership of the GSU and bomb unit, Lagat faces scrutiny over claims tying him to the death and alleged corruption within the National Police Service.
Inspector General Douglas Kanja testified before the Senate that Lagat would step aside if implicated, emphasizing impartial investigations.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has already arrested several officers and civilians in connection with Ojwang’s death. As the inquiry continues, all eyes remain on delivering accountability and transparency in the police service.
