Duale, KMA boss Kigondu in heated clash over SHA debt, fraud allegations and closed health facilities

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale and Kenya Medical Association (KMA) President Dr. Simon Kigondu are locked in a war of words over the Social Health Authority (SHA).

Dr. Kigondu accused the government’s new insurance scheme of “failing Kenyans,” saying its Practice 360 App was restrictive and that SHA had already accumulated more debt in ten months than NHIF did in six years.

But Duale hit back strongly, defending the app as a vital tool against fraud and accusing Kigondu of having vested interests. According to Duale, some facilities owned by Kigondu were among those flagged or suspended for irregularities.

On August 29, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) closed 158 facilities across the country after joint inspections by regulators and county governments. Duale said SHA’s digital systems were central to the ongoing crackdown on fraudulent claims.

The row has intensified scrutiny on SHA’s operations, exposing the growing tension between government health reforms and the medical fraternity.
