The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging plans to raid the home of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
In a phone interview on Thursday, EACC officials categorically described the claims as “fake” and without basis.
“Ignore the reports. That is fake,” the Commission clarified, countering viral posts that had suggested imminent action against the Speaker.
The rumors come days after President William Ruto vowed to crack down on legislators accused of soliciting bribes to influence parliamentary proceedings. On Monday, the President told a joint parliamentary group meeting of Kenya Kwanza and ODM lawmakers that MPs and Senators implicated in corruption would face prosecution.
The Head of State expressed anger over reports that committee members have been demanding bribes to sway decisions, calling it a betrayal of their constitutional mandate.
In response, the National Assembly on Tuesday suspended all committee sittings in protest against the President’s remarks, accusing the Executive of undermining Parliament’s independence. Senate committees, however, continued with their scheduled meetings, albeit under protest.
Meanwhile, Speaker Wetang’ula is currently in Mombasa leading Members of Parliament in a two-day retreat. The meeting brings together members of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), committee chairs, women representatives, and other legislators to deliberate on Parliament’s role and strengthen collaboration with the Judiciary.
The retreat aims to renew institutional synergy and enhance Parliament’s effectiveness in executing its oversight and legislative duties.
