Facing Mt. Kenya: Fallout with the Deputy President

President William Ruto discussed the internal struggles within the Kenya Kwanza Coalition that led to his fallout with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. During a roundtable interview in Sagana, Ruto described how Gachagua clashed with key figures, including MPs Ndidi Nyoro, Kimani Ichung’wa, and blogger Dennis Itumbi.

The president clarified that he did not personally push for Gachagua’s removal. He emphasized that the process adhered to legal protocols. “I did not sign anywhere for the removal of the deputy president, but those involved followed the law,” Ruto said.

Gachagua’s hostile behavior toward lawmakers prompted swift action. “The MPs acted quickly because they were told to bow down to him or face losing their positions,” Ruto explained.

He revealed that Gachagua demanded KSh 10 billion to rally political support in the Mt. Kenya region. “He told me, ‘I can make you a one-term president unless you give me KSh 10 billion to organize support in the Mt. Kenya region.’ I refused. If it was meant for me to be a one-term president, then so be it,” Ruto recounted.

Ruto dismissed concerns about political tensions in Mt. Kenya as he prepared for his nine-county tour starting Tuesday. He outlined the tour’s purpose to showcase his administration’s achievements. “I am here because the people of Kenya, including those from Central Kenya, gave me a mandate. From tomorrow, it will be clear whether I have fulfilled my promises,” he said.

Responding to criticism from Gachagua and his allies, Ruto defended his track record by highlighting his development projects. “I have heard some leaders say I have done nothing. But I initiated the road from Marua, passing through Wamunyoro, where this very critic lives,” he remarked.
