The optimism that surrounded Harambee Stars after their solid African Nations Championship (CHAN) run was short-lived after Kenya suffered a 3-1 defeat to Gambia in a World Cup qualifier at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Supporters who had packed the stadium expecting a continuation of CHAN momentum were left disappointed as Gambia stunned Kenya with three goals before the 40th minute. The loss triggered heated debate among fans, with many faulting coach Benni McCarthy for sidelining CHAN stars in favour of foreign-based players.
While fans argued that the local squad had better chemistry, McCarthy defended his decision, insisting World Cup qualifiers demand players competing in top European leagues. He controversially claimed Kenya would have lost “10-0” had he relied solely on CHAN players.
Gambia’s Yakuba Minteh, who plays for Brighton in the English Premier League, was among the standout performers, while Kenya’s lone goal came late through striker Ryan Ogam.
The result leaves Kenya fifth in Group 5, effectively ending their 2026 World Cup qualification hopes with three matches remaining. Harambee Stars next face Seychelles at Kasarani on September 9.
