Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati spent Monday night in police custody ahead of his arraignment in court on Tuesday, September 2, in connection with a Ksh70 million graft case.
Wangamati surrendered himself to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) headquarters at Integrity Centre, Nairobi, after being summoned. He was later escorted to Kilimani Police Station, where he is being held.
The EACC confirmed that it had secured consent from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to charge the former governor alongside several associates.
Investigators accuse Wangamati of embezzling county funds during his tenure as Bungoma governor between 2017 and 2022.
On Friday, August 29, the EACC named over 10 individuals linked to companies suspected of siphoning millions from county coffers. The commission directed them, alongside Wangamati, to report to Integrity Centre on Monday for processing and arraignment.
“The above-named suspects are directed to present themselves at the EACC Headquarters, Integrity Centre, on Monday, 1st September 2025, at 8:00 am for processing and arraignment,” EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud said in a statement.
Speaking after his arrest, Wangamati dismissed the charges as politically motivated, linking his troubles to succession politics in Bungoma ahead of the 2027 elections.
