Former Chief Justice David Maraga has confirmed his intentions to contest the 2027 presidential election under the United Green Movement Party, emphasizing that his alliances will be guided strictly by integrity and respect for the rule of law.
In an interview with The Eastleigh Voice, Maraga stressed that he is open to partnering with leaders who share his commitment to ethical leadership, constitutionalism, and national transformation, but refused to work with politicians motivated by ethnic patronage.
“I do not oppose working with other leaders in our quest to remove Ruto from office in the next General Election. However, those I will work with must value integrity, ethics, and the rule of law,” Maraga said.
The former CJ rejected tribal politics, warning that ethnic-based alliances exacerbate corruption and governance failures. He explained that he rallies both his Kisii community and other Kenyans equally, without giving special consideration based on birth.
Maraga’s announcement comes amid talks of a potential coalition with former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i and other opposition leaders. “We will work with anyone committed to enforcing the Constitution, fighting corruption, and protecting citizens from exploitation,” he said.
Dismissive of claims labeling him a “State project,” Maraga asserted his independence and warned against narratives undermining his candidacy. His 2027 bid has stirred debate in Kisii, with Senator Richard Onyonka expressing concern over Maraga’s challenge to Dr Matiang’i’s support base.
Maraga’s focus on law, fairness, and equity positions him as a candidate prioritizing governance reforms over ethnic mobilization, signaling a new approach to opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
