Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Says his life is in danger, Demands Protection

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has voiced concerns about his safety, stating that his life is at risk. On April 15, 2025, he accused Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja of withdrawing his security detail, leaving him exposed to potential harm. Gachagua also informed President William Ruto about the situation.

Impeached in October 2024, Gachagua pointed to several incidents as evidence of threats. At a church service in Mwiki, his private security fired warning shots to disperse a disruptive crowd. On December 28, 2024, a teargas canister was thrown at his event in Nyandarua. Another incident occurred on April 6, 2025, at PCEA Kasarani East Parish.

Gachagua alleged that the state arranged these threats, using criminal gangs to target him. He claimed National Intelligence Service operatives were trailing him and his family in unmarked vehicles, which he called an invasion of privacy. He demanded IG Kanja take immediate action, including arresting those involved and reinstating his security detail.

The allegations have sparked public and political debate. Some sympathize with Gachagua and worry about his safety. Others criticize his claims as politically motivated. Social media reactions are mixed, with some accusing him of seeking public sympathy and others calling for an investigation.

This controversy arises amid heightened political tension in Kenya, with the 2027 General Election approaching.
