Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has died following a fatal road crash along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway in Karai area, Naivasha, Nakuru County.

Traffic police confirmed that Jirongo, aged 64, lost his life in the early hours of Saturday after his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a 45-seater bus. The accident occurred at around 3.00am, with officers saying he died instantly at the scene.

His body was taken to a local mortuary as arrangements were made to transfer it to Nairobi. Family members indicated that Jirongo had been driving alone after attending a meeting with leaders from Western Kenya in Nairobi.

Tributes poured in from political leaders and labour officials, who described him as a bold mobiliser and influential figure in Kenya’s political history.

Born in 1961, Jirongo rose to prominence in the early 1990s as a key political organiser before winning the Lugari parliamentary seat in 1997. He later served as Minister for Rural Development and remained active in national politics for decades, including a presidential bid in 2017.
