Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has launched a much-anticipated tour of the Gusii region, marking his return to politics after months of silence. The tour, covering Kisii and Nyamira counties, has attracted considerable attention. Many observers believe Matiang’i may be laying the groundwork for a 2027 presidential bid.
Supporters welcomed Matiang’i with enthusiasm as he arrived in the region. In Kisii Town, businesses paused briefly while residents filled the streets to cheer him on. His convoy, decorated with campaign-style branding, made stops in several towns, including Kijauri, Keroka, Keumbu, Kisii, and Nyamira.
This tour appears aimed at reconnecting with grassroots supporters and strengthening his local influence. Early in the morning, Matiang’i met with local leaders at his Simbauti Farm residence in Borabu, Nyamira County. These strategy sessions kicked off a full day of political activities.
Notably, several prominent Gusii leaders joined Matiang’i during the tour. These included Governors Simba Arati and Amos Nyaribo, Senators Momoima Onyonka and Okong’o Omogeni, as well as multiple Members of Parliament and County Assembly representatives.
Although Matiang’i has not officially declared his presidential candidacy, signs point to growing political ambitions. Posters and branded vehicles hint at a larger campaign. Moreover, his recent meetings with opposition leaders suggest he is preparing to play a more significant national role.
Recently, Matiang’i joined key opposition figures—such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Martha Karua—for talks on building a broad coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The tour will continue with additional events across the Gusii region. One major highlight is an upcoming ceremony where community elders may formally endorse Matiang’i as their spokesperson.
