Fresh impeachment threat against Sakaja

Members of the Nairobi County Assembly have revived efforts to impeach Johnson Sakaja for the second time in under a year, barely two weeks after he signed a Ksh80 billion cooperation agreement with the national government.

The renewed push was announced during a press briefing led by Nairobi South Ward MCA Esther Waithera Chege. The legislators indicated that it is only a matter of days before the impeachment motion is formally submitted to the Clerk and subsequently tabled before the Speaker for consideration.

According to the MCAs, the new motion will outline 22 grounds for impeachment. However, they declined to publicly disclose the details of the allegations, saying they will be made available once the motion is officially tabled in the House.

Chege maintained that the latest move is independent of last year’s impeachment attempt, insisting it is based on a fresh set of grievances.

“We have enough signatures for the first round. The second round comes within seven days, and I can assure you we have an overflow of signatures,” she said, expressing confidence that the threshold required to initiate the process has been met.

The development comes months after an earlier impeachment bid in September 2025, when more than 70 MCAs in the 123-member Assembly backed a similar motion against the governor. At the time, the push triggered high-level political intervention, including meetings involving President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

One of the key meetings was held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation, where Sakaja met ODM-allied MCAs in a bid to ease tensions and chart a path forward. Nairobi County ODM Chairperson George Aladwa later stated that the governor acknowledged concerns raised by MCAs and apologised, committing to improve his working relationship with the Assembly within 60 days.

During the earlier attempt, legislators cited issues such as delays in bursary disbursement, stalled Ward Development Fund programmes and alleged failure to deliver on campaign pledges.

However, the current impeachment bid is said to be unrelated to those earlier complaints. MCAs have remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the 22 charges, heightening political tension at City Hall.

The unfolding standoff sets the stage for another political showdown that could test relations between the county executive and the Assembly, even as Nairobi navigates major financial and governance decisions.
