Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hit back at President William Ruto over remarks questioning the viability of the Azimio coalition without the ODM party, escalating political tensions around the opposition’s future.
Speaking on Sunday evening in Naivasha, Gachagua claimed ODM has lost its grip across several regions that once formed its political backbone. He argued that communities in Western Kenya, Nyanza, Eastern and the Coast have shifted allegiances, insisting the party no longer commands national influence.
President Ruto, addressing residents in Nairobi earlier in the day, downplayed efforts to revive Azimio, questioning how the coalition could function without ODM.
The exchange comes days after Azimio’s National Executive Council appointed Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as the new coalition leader, following the death of Raila Odinga, signaling a new chapter in opposition politics.
