Gachagua says opposition not rushed to name 2027 presidential candidate

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has dismissed calls for the opposition to immediately unveil a presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a press briefing on Tuesday, Gachagua said coalition-building within the United Opposition remains ongoing and should not be rushed. He cited the 2002 elections, noting that former President Mwai Kibaki was endorsed as the opposition flagbearer just over two months to the polls.

“There is no hurry. Coalition building is delicate, and we must get it right,” Gachagua said, adding that the alliance remains committed to fronting a single candidate.

The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader accused President Ruto of prioritising early campaigns over governance, alleging that State House has been turned into a political platform for ruling party activities.

Gachagua further claimed that corruption has been normalised across key institutions, including Parliament, accusing the President and his deputy of enabling bribery in public life. The government has previously denied similar allegations.
