Githurai MCA Deonysias Mwangi resigns, cites frustration over failed projects and neglected services

Githurai Ward MCA Deonysias Mwangi Waithira has officially resigned, citing frustration over the Nairobi County Executive’s failure to deliver essential services and implement ward projects.

In a resignation letter dated Wednesday, September 17, 2025, addressed to the Nairobi County Assembly Speaker, Mwangi said his exit will take effect on November 1, 2025.

He lamented persistent neglect by the Executive, despite his numerous efforts through parliamentary statements, committee work, and oversight.

Mwangi listed dilapidated roads including Cifu, Rurii Powerline, Chiro, Mucoe, Kweche, and Kirogo roads, alongside the poor state of Githurai Level 3 Hospital, which he said is understaffed and incomplete. He also cited the stalled Githurai Sports Ground, unfulfilled executive promises, and delays in funding that crippled ward operations.

“As such, I cannot, in good conscience, continue to hold office under the current regime while the residents of Githurai Ward remain underserved and neglected,” Mwangi stated.

Mwangi, elected under the UDA Party in the 2022 General Election, now paves the way for a by-election in Githurai Ward.

His resignation comes amid heightened political tension in Nairobi, just days after President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga intervened to block impeachment proceedings against Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Both leaders met Nairobi MCAs separately, urging reconciliation. Governor Sakaja pledged improved transparency in managing bursary allocations and development funds. ODM later gave him a one-month ultimatum to resolve his differences with MCAs and build a collaborative working relationship.
