Siaya County has hit the mineral jackpot after Sh8 billion worth of gold was discovered in Gem Ramula, County Commissioner Norbert Komora announced during Jamhuri Day celebrations at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya town.
Komora emphasized that the government will oversee structured exploitation of the resource, warning that it will not allow unlawful or chaotic mining that could harm both residents and the local economy. Under current regulations, the county government will receive 20% of the gold’s value, while the local community will benefit 10%.
He also appealed for public support of the national government, noting the billions already invested in Siaya. Meanwhile, Komora raised alarms over poor rainfall, predicting food shortages, and said the county disaster management committee would soon convene to plan mitigation strategies.
Siaya Governor James Orengo, represented by County Director of Administration George Okello, called for unity and collective efforts to turn the county into a model of prosperity and sustainable growth.
