Government creates three new Nairobi sub-regions in major reshuffle to boost service delivery and security

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has unveiled a major administrative shake-up in Nairobi, announcing the creation of three new sub-regions Nairobi North, Nairobi East, and Nairobi West aimed at improving service delivery and strengthening security coordination in the capital.

In a gazette notice issued on Thursday, November 13, Murkomen said the new divisions were established in response to Nairobi’s rapidly growing population, which now exceeds five million people.

“The capital’s growth has come with increased service delivery demands and complex security challenges. These changes are meant to ensure better coordination and faster response to citizens’ needs,” Murkomen said.

He appointed and promoted three senior administrators to head the newly created regions: Rose Wanjiru Chege (Nairobi West), Patrick Simiyu Werre (Nairobi East), and Simon Odhiambo Osumba (Nairobi North).

The Interior CS also promoted six officers to the rank of County Commissioner in different parts of the country as part of the government’s wider restructuring of the National Government Administration.

Those promoted include Joseph Mwangi Wamuti (Tana River), Linda Adhiambo Okola (Taita Taveta), David Ntawuasa Saruni (West Pokot), Michael Yator (Kajiado), Jeremiah Mwai Gicheru (Kericho), and Peter Mwangi Maina (Vihiga).

Murkomen explained that the reassignment of County Commissioners across the country was done based on individual experience and performance to strengthen local governance and security management.

He further noted that the move aligns with feedback gathered from citizens during the government’s ongoing Jukwaa La Usalama public forums, where residents raised concerns over security coordination and access to government services.

“These changes take effect immediately. The officers are expected to take up their new positions without delay,” the CS stated.

The reshuffle marks one of the most significant administrative reforms in Nairobi in recent years, reflecting the government’s renewed focus on efficiency, accountability, and citizen-centered service delivery.
