On Monday morning, several Kenyan government websites were hit by a coordinated cyberattack, leaving key online services inaccessible and sparking fears over national digital security. Ministries and state agencies affected included Health, Education, Labour, Environment, ICT, Tourism, State House, and Interior.
Hackers defaced the websites, posting extremist messages such as “Access denied by PCP,” “We will rise again,” “White power worldwide,” and “14:88 Heil Hitler.” Other agencies disrupted included the Immigration Department, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Hustler Fund, and Government Press. Nairobi County websites also experienced downtime.
Services from eCitizen, NTSA, KNEC, the Judiciary, and the National Police Service, however, were reported running normally. Ministries such as Defence and Treasury were reportedly spared.
No group has claimed responsibility, and the government has yet to release an official statement. The attacks have left many Kenyans frustrated, unable to access critical services online, while raising urgent questions about cybersecurity preparedness and the potential exposure of sensitive data.
The country experienced a similar breach in 2023, which was later claimed by a Sudanese hacker group as retaliation over alleged Kenyan interference in Sudan, although evidence was not provided.
Authorities are investigating the current attacks and working to restore disrupted services while urging the public to be vigilant with online interactions.
