Government moves to rein in rogue boda boda riders with new uniform, SACCO rules

The government has unveiled new measures to regulate boda boda riders across the country following concerns over rising indiscipline and lawlessness in the sector.

During a high-level meeting in Nairobi on Thursday, chaired by Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Seda, officials resolved to introduce county-specific uniforms for boda boda riders to enhance accountability and make identification easier.

Additionally, all operators will now be required to register under Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) to promote discipline, strengthen regulation, and improve financial responsibility in the fast-growing sector.

Boda Boda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK) chairperson Kevin Mbadi confirmed that the association had signed an MoU with lawyers who will provide free legal aid to riders in road-related disputes. Mbadi cautioned riders against mob justice, insisting that only police are mandated to handle investigations and enforce the law.

Commander Seda echoed the warning, saying police would take firm action against riders who interfere with accident scenes or obstruct investigations. He stressed that discipline within the sector is no longer optional.

The sector, which employs more than 1.6 million Kenyans, most of them youth, has faced growing public criticism over reckless behaviour and incidents of violence. The new measures are expected to restore order and rebuild public trust in the industry.
