Government Teams Up with South Korean Scholars to Study Gen Z Struggles Amid Youth-Led Protests

Kenya will host researchers from South Korea’s Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) in a bold new study focused on understanding the struggles facing young people in the country.

The State Department for Youth Affairs and the Creative Economy confirmed the development in a statement released on Monday, July 14. The scholars will carry out a national survey that explores the social, psychological, economic, and political challenges affecting Kenyan youth.

The government hopes the findings will shape future policies and create new opportunities for collaboration between Kenya and South Korea.

Leading the research team are Professor Jeon Only, Director of the Africa Human Resource Development Centre at HUFS, and Professor Bae Yuh Jin, Director of the Centre for African Culture and History.

“The youth demographic is a challenge not only in Kenya but across the world, and the need to understand them is critical to inform appropriate policy interventions for their needs,” the directors noted.

Hankuk University is one of four institutions in South Korea that have applied for government-funded research grants to study youth development in Africa.

This initiative comes at a time when Kenya’s youth are taking center stage in public discourse. Through social media and street demonstrations, many young people are demanding accountability and better governance.

Since the nationwide protests on June 25, 2024, thousands of youth have voiced their frustrations, calling for real change. The government has responded with tough warnings. President William Ruto told security forces to “shoot culprits in the leg” in cases of looting or vandalism, a comment that sparked further anger among young demonstrators.

Despite rising tensions, religious leaders and political figures are urging restraint. They continue to call for open dialogue between the government and the youth.

While the research is expected to begin soon, the exact timeline has not yet been announced.
