Government tightens security for Ksh200B Rironi–Mau Summit Road project

The government has stepped up security measures to safeguard the Sh200 billion Rironi–Mau Summit Road project as construction progresses.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said additional security personnel will be deployed along key sections of the highway and alternative diversion routes to protect infrastructure, workers and road users.

The Rironi–Mau Summit Road, a critical transport artery connecting Nairobi to the Western region, has in recent years been associated with heavy congestion and fatal accidents. The government says the upgrade will ease perennial traffic snarl-ups and enhance safety once complete.

Speaking during a development tour in Naivasha, Murkomen noted that the multi-billion-shilling project, financed through a Public-Private Partnership framework, has already commenced and is expected to be completed by June next year.

Security officers will operate around the clock during the construction period, including the upcoming World Safari Rally, to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent disruptions.

Murkomen added that local youth, women and business communities are expected to benefit from employment opportunities during the year-long construction phase. He said Naivasha and Mai Mahiu towns stand to gain economically as improved infrastructure attracts investors, tourists and conference visitors.

The CS also announced the resumption of a long-stalled administrative office project for Naivasha Sub-County, funded to the tune of Sh50 million after approval by the National Treasury. In addition, his ministry has partnered with the Ministry of Housing to construct houses for police officers in the area to address accommodation shortages.

At the same time, Murkomen confirmed the formation of the Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit to tackle rising crime, drug abuse and gang activity within the Nairobi metropolitan region. The unit will incorporate modern surveillance systems, including cameras and artificial intelligence, to strengthen investigations and improve response time.

The CS urged political leaders to coordinate with security agencies ahead of public rallies to avoid chaos, warning against the use of hired groups to disrupt meetings. Investigations are ongoing into recent unrest that disrupted businesses and led to loss of life in Kitengela.

Murkomen reiterated that enhanced security and infrastructure development remain central to the government’s efforts to boost economic growth and public safety.
