Council of Governors Vice-Chairman and Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has called on the National Government to establish partnership agreements with counties bordering national parks.
He urged adopting models similar to Kajiado and Narok, where local communities benefit directly from tourism activities in Amboseli and Maasai Mara.
Speaking during Jamhuri Day celebrations at Kajiunduthi Stadium in Maara Constituency, Njuki emphasized that several tourist sites in Tharaka Nithi contribute significantly to the national economy, yet local communities gain minimal financial returns. He stressed the need for equitable revenue-sharing frameworks to improve livelihoods and support conservation efforts.
Governor Njuki also highlighted the importance of protecting fragile ecosystems, warning against illegal logging and forest encroachment. County Commissioner David Gitonga reinforced the message, noting that endangered species such as the pancake tortoise are at risk. He also raised concerns over rising teenage pregnancies and illegal alcohol sales, urging stricter enforcement and community vigilance.
Both county and national officials pledged continued collaboration to promote development, safeguard natural resources, and enhance residents’ welfare.
