Governor Sakaja reveals Nairobi MCAs’ impeachment attempt was fueled by delayed bursaries and scholarship frustrations

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has opened up on the reasons behind the attempted impeachment motion against him by some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, October 7, Sakaja revealed that the move was largely fueled by frustrations over delayed bursary and scholarship disbursements that affected thousands of students across the capital.

“Imagine Nairobi, 119,000 students; bursaries are about Ksh5,300 for Form One and some Form Two and Form Three students. When these funds are suspended, the pressure is huge. People rely on this support, and naturally, frustration builds,” he explained, noting that the suspension by the Controller of Budget created political tension at the ward level.

Sakaja also addressed claims of inaccessibility, clarifying that he works from a private office to manage sensitive county matters efficiently.

“I have had this office since I was a senator. Some matters must be handled privately. Politics on the ground are complex, and you must protect the interests of those you serve,” he stated.

The governor credited President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga for mediating talks that helped ease the standoff, saying their intervention prevented a full-blown political crisis at City Hall.

“It is by the grace of God and good leadership that we reached a resolution. People want quick solutions, but meaningful results take time,” Sakaja said.

He assured Nairobi residents that his administration remains focused on improving service delivery, restoring trust with MCAs, and ensuring bursaries are released promptly to support needy students.

The impeachment threat, which was initiated by a section of ODM-allied MCAs earlier in the year, was suspended following internal negotiations. The MCAs gave Sakaja time to address their grievances and restore stability in his administration.
