The Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry (MITI) has invited Kenyans to give their views on the proposed Standards Bill 2025, a draft law that could significantly reshape how goods and services are regulated in the country.
According to the ministry, the bill aims to establish a strong legal framework for standardization, metrology, and conformity assessment. The reforms seek to guarantee consumer safety, improve the quality of goods sold locally, and promote fair trade practices within and across Kenya’s borders.
“The Ministry of Investments, Trade and Industry (MITI) has developed a draft Standards Bill, 2025. The Bill seeks to provide an overarching framework to promote standardization, metrology and conformity assessment in industry and trade, provide for the safety and quality of products and services, and facilitate fair trade practices in Kenya,” reads part of the official notice.
If enacted, the law will introduce stricter checks to ensure products meet the required standards before reaching consumers. While this will boost consumer confidence, it is expected to increase compliance costs for businesses, including additional expenses for testing and certification.
The ministry has urged Kenyans to submit written feedback via the Kenya Bureau of Standards website or by emailing standardsbill@kebs.org
before October 28, 2025.
To widen participation, MITI has also organized a series of public consultation forums across the country. The sessions will begin on October 8 at Sarova Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa, followed by the Mt Kenya region forum on October 13 at Marsabit FK Resort and Spa.
Other scheduled meetings include:
North Eastern Region: Mandera Government Guest House, Garissa – October 15
Nyanza Region: Ciala Resort, Kisumu – October 17
North Rift Region: Sirikwa Hotel, Eldoret – October 21
South Rift Region: Merica Hotel, Nakuru – October 23
Nairobi: Eka Hotel – October 27
The government hopes broad public input will shape a bill that balances consumer protection with the realities facing businesses, as Kenya positions itself for stronger trade competitiveness.
