Atheist Society of Kenya president Harrison Mumia has been released on a Ksh1 million bond or an alternative cash bail of Ksh500,000 after denying charges of spreading false information about President William Ruto’s death.
Mumia, 47, appeared before the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, January 5, where he pleaded not guilty to charges brought under Section 22(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018.
Prosecutors told the court that on December 30, 2025, Mumia allegedly used Facebook and Instagram accounts including a pseudonymous account to post images falsely portraying the President as deceased.
According to the charge sheet, the posts were deliberately misleading and intended to spread false information regarding the President’s health.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions listed police officers and a digital forensics expert among its witnesses.
Mumia was arrested on January 2, held in custody, and later released on bond pending mention of the case on January 19, 2026.
