Health ministry engages Italian NGO to expand life-changing reconstructive surgery access for vulnerable children across Kenya

The Ministry of Health has moved to strengthen partnerships aimed at expanding access to specialised surgical care for children with complex medical needs.

Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni hosted a delegation from Emergenza Sorrisi ETS, led by its President Fabio Massimo, during a consultative meeting held alongside Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala.

Emergenza Sorrisi ETS is a Rome-based humanitarian organisation internationally recognised for providing reconstructive surgery to children affected by facial deformities, craniofacial malformations and severe burn scars. The organisation draws on a global network of more than 370 volunteer medical professionals.

The NGO is currently conducting a specialised surgical mission in Nairobi in partnership with the Kenya Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (KASPRAS).

Discussions focused on knowledge transfer, capacity building within Kenya’s health system, and expanding access to specialised reconstructive care for vulnerable children nationwide. Senior officials from the Ministries of Health and Education and medical training experts attended the meeting.
