Heavy rains expected in Kiambu and 12 other counties

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a warning over heavy rainfall expected to affect at least 13 counties, including Kiambu, between December 27 and December 30.

In an advisory released on Friday, the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry said parts of the south-eastern lowlands will receive significant rainfall at the start of the period, before conditions gradually ease toward the end of December.

Counties listed in the alert include Kiambu, Nairobi, Machakos, Kajiado, Makueni, Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kwale and Taita Taveta, as well as southern parts of Kitui.

According to the advisory, some areas could receive rainfall exceeding 20 millimetres within 24 hours, with intensity expected to rise to over 30 millimetres as the system spreads to the highlands east and west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin and parts of the Coast.

Residents in Kiambu and other affected counties have been urged to remain vigilant, monitor official updates and take precautionary measures against possible flooding and disruptions.

The warning comes amid ongoing festive season travel, with authorities advising the public to exercise caution during the wet weather period.
