The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) Chief Executive Officer, Geoffrey Monari, has cautioned university and college students against missing classes, warning that attendance plays a key role in determining loan disbursement.
Speaking on Tuesday morning during an interview on Spice FM, Monari explained that strict verification measures are in place and students who fail to attend classes risk losing their upkeep. He revealed that the board even reclaims funds disbursed to defunct or wrong student accounts once verified.
Monari urged learners to ensure their bank accounts remain active and mobile money details are accurate to avoid delays. His remarks follow rising concerns from students who have decried delays in receiving their upkeep.
Acknowledging the concerns, Monari assured that HELB is working to resolve pending cases. “We will look at the special cases because there are a few cases that were not paid, but we are working towards that,” he said.
He added that HELB had already disbursed Ksh21 billion this semester, Ksh18 billion to universities and Ksh3 billion to colleges. The Ministry of Education recently increased HELB’s budget allocation from Ksh36 billion to Ksh41 billion for the 2025/2026 financial year to cushion more learners from financial strain.
