High Court freezes Kiambu Governor Wamatangi’s accounts

The High Court has ordered the freezing of bank accounts belonging to Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi, his immediate family members and several associates over alleged corruption-linked funds amounting to Ksh813 million.

The orders were issued on Thursday by Justice Benjamin Mwikya following an application by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), which is pursuing a civil recovery case against the governor.

Under the ruling, Governor Wamatangi, his wife, children and ten other individuals are barred from accessing the funds until the court gives further directions. The matter is scheduled for mention on February 4, 2026.

EACC argued that without preservation orders, there was a real risk that the disputed funds suspected to be proceeds of corruption could be withdrawn or concealed, undermining ongoing investigations.

Justice Mwikya noted that no preservation orders were in place when the case initially came before the trial court, necessitating fresh intervention.

“The circumstances have since changed, and in the interest of justice, the court grants the orders sought pending further directions,” the judge ruled.
