The government has defended the demolition of Makongeni Estate in Nairobi, saying most tenants have already received Ksh150,000 in relocation compensation as part of the Eastlands regeneration program.
Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development, Charles Hinga, said the estate, which covers 139 hectares under the Kenya Railways Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme, is being redeveloped to include modern residential, commercial, and civic facilities. Residents will have first priority to purchase units in the new affordable housing project once construction is complete.
Hinga explained that of the 3,600 tenants affected, 3,300 have received compensation via M-Pesa, while delays for the remainder are due to verification issues. Subtenants who were not initially informed will also receive Ksh150,000. He noted the relocation payout was originally Ksh30,000 but was increased following tenant negotiations.
Makadara MP George Aladwa defended the project, saying the redevelopment will bring long-term benefits, including residential blocks, commercial spaces, schools, hospitals, parks, and modern infrastructure. Officials emphasized that all notices and negotiations were conducted transparently to ensure a fair process for residents.
