The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has unveiled an ambitious plan to register at least 6.3 million new voters in a nationwide exercise set to begin on September 29, 2025.
The mass registration drive will mainly target first-time voters who have recently turned 18, as well as citizens who wish to update their voter details ahead of the 2027 General Election.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon called on staff to treat the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise with utmost urgency, stressing that every eligible Kenyan must be given the opportunity to take part in shaping the country’s democratic future.
“This is not just about numbers. It’s about upholding the right of every Kenyan to vote. Our teams must be fully prepared,” said Ethekon.
Preparations are already underway, with the Commission mapping out registration centers, training personnel, testing ICT systems, and planning public sensitization forums aimed at ensuring both high turnout and accuracy in voter records.
The IEBC has also urged Kenyans who are already registered to confirm or update their details, including changes in polling stations, national ID information, or bio-metric records.
With the youth forming the bulk of unregistered voters, the exercise is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting participation in the 2027 polls.
Analysts note that the credibility of the upcoming election will largely depend on the success of this registration process. For the Commission, the challenge lies in ensuring transparency, efficiency, and public trust as Kenya moves closer to what could become one of its most inclusive electoral moments in history.
