The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has condemned the violence that erupted during the Kasipul parliamentary campaigns, warning that it could lead to the disqualification of candidates and political parties involved.
In a statement issued on Friday, November 7, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the commission had dispatched an investigative team to probe the clashes that left two people dead and several others injured.
The chaos broke out on Thursday, November 6, during a campaign rally for ODM candidate Boyd Were in Opondo, Central Kasipul. The event reportedly turned violent after suspected goons allegedly linked to independent candidate Philip Aroko stormed the venue, attacking supporters and destroying property.
Boyd, the son of the late Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were, said the rally had started peacefully before gunshots and chaos disrupted proceedings. However, Aroko dismissed the claims, accusing Boyd’s team of instigating the violence.
“The Commission reminds all candidates, political parties, and their supporters that violating the Electoral Code of Conduct attracts severe penalties, including disqualification,” IEBC warned, calling on security agencies to move swiftly and bring perpetrators to justice.
The Kasipul by-election is scheduled for November 27, 2025, with IEBC urging all stakeholders to maintain peace and respect the rule of law.
